DEER INFORMATION
Deer are some of nature’s most beautiful creatures, but they can be an absolute nightmare to your landscaping.
Deer enjoy a wide variety of vegetation from trees and shrubs to ground cover plants. They eat in order of height, so your evergreen trees, ornamental trees and shrubs will be the first to be eaten. The plants and shrubs will have a torn, stripped appearance since deer have no upper incisors. The plantings will not have a chewed appearance. Deer will eat all foliage and have even been known to strip the bark off shrubs. If your shrubs have no leaves, and the branches and stems have a rough or shredded appearance, this is a result of deer damage.
The majority of deer damage occurs in the mid to late fall and throughout the winter. As deer become hungrier and food becomes scarcer, deer will eat any available plant or shrub; even those considered to be "deer resistant".
Some plants, shrubs, and trees that are notoriously prone to deer damage include:
Hosta
Arborvitae
Azaleas
Yews
Hemlocks
Hydrangea
Tulips
Rhododendrons
Apple/Crab Apple Trees
Euonymus
White Pines
A safe, non-toxic repellent spray is the best way to prevent your plantings from being destroyed by deer.
